Lyophilized peptides are shipped dry because that is the form in which they are most stable. Handled properly, a sealed vial tolerates transit at ambient temperature without meaningful loss; handled carelessly after it arrives, the same vial can degrade in days.

On arrival

Move vials to cold storage as soon as they are logged in. Sealed and lyophilized, material is normally held at −20 °C for long-term storage, or at 2–8 °C if it will be used within a few weeks. Keep vials in the dark and away from humidity — an unsealed vial that draws moisture will cake, and a caked vial will not reconstitute cleanly.

Let a vial reach room temperature before opening it. Opening a cold vial pulls moist air onto cold powder, and that is the most common avoidable cause of a batch behaving unexpectedly.

Reconstitution

Bacteriostatic water is the usual diluent for laboratory work; sterile water is used where the benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water would interfere with an assay. Add the diluent slowly down the inside wall of the vial rather than directly onto the powder, and let it dissolve on its own. Do not shake. Peptides are surfactant-sensitive, and vigorous agitation drives foaming and denaturation at the air–liquid interface.

Swirl gently if it needs help. If material has not dissolved after a few minutes at room temperature, leave it longer rather than agitating it harder.

After reconstitution

Once in solution, stability drops sharply. Aliquot into single-use volumes and freeze what is not needed immediately — repeated freeze–thaw cycles are far more damaging than time in the freezer. A working aliquot held at 2–8 °C is generally used within a short window; anything held longer should be treated as suspect and re-checked rather than assumed.

Label every aliquot with the compound, the batch number and the date it was reconstituted. The batch number is what ties your sample back to its published certificate.
